Air from machine tools extracted through local exhaust ventilation systems contains gaseous compounds that are harmful to health. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health found already in 2009 in a research report that these compounds cause various occupational health problems for machine operators.
These health problems are caused by chemicals from cutting fluid that turn into aerosols under high heat. Aerosols pass through conventional oil mist filters into the breathing air.
Even after removing the visible pollutants formed by particles from the air, the working environment is not necessarily clean or healthy. To achieve healthy conditions, gaseous air pollutants must be removed as well. This is technically challenging.
